The story line for "Everybody Loves Candy" was
written and developed by
Brian Dale. The concept came about after many conversations with
twelve
year-olds and delving into what was important in their lives. Peer
group,
mobile phones, friendship, family relationships, personal
achievement and
image were all mentioned in various degrees of importance.
The idea of a guardian angel watching over us is not new. However it
was
an idea that gave us a literary license to compare and contrast the
lives of
young adults and their angel guardians.
Our central characters, Candy, Genevieve and Melinda are all
exploring
different ways to express their individuality and ways to cope with
the
various challenges that life has given them. The guardian angels are
also
on a learning curve as to how they can best assist their human child
and
learn about the complexities of human behaviour. Of course, we have
a
touch of mischief created by some not-so-perfect angels.
Several of the characters and some of their idiosyncrasies were
created by
the performers. We consciously encourage the students at Bright
Lights to
improvise and develop roles that appeal to their sense of humour and
range of acting ability. Shekinah, Charmiene, Ariel, Micah and
Fortunata
are all angel characters devised and brought to life by the
students.
We have also highlighted specific abilities that the performers
possess. This
many be a talent in dancing, creative movement, voice projection,
the
ability to use various accents, a little improvisation or an
expressive face
with a beguiling smile.
"Everybody loves Candy" is a composite representing the various
ideas and
talents of the first Bright Lights Performance.
